The Downtown Waco Farmer's Market has operated since 2011

Since 2011 the Downtown Waco Farmers Market has been in operation, offering year-round access to local agriculture and artisan vendors every Saturday and now Tuesday. KWBU’s Carlos Morales reports on their upcoming expansion.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Farmers markets have grown in popularity “mostly due to the growing consumer interest in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm.” That’s what Camille Cody, manager of The Downtown Waco Farmers Market, says is the part of the impetus behind creating a midweek market.

"Having a midweek market is something that the board has been talking about for a while and there just wasn’t enough momentum for it in the past," Cody said, "but now with a really positive vendor response and board momentum as well as positive community response in Waco we feel this is the perfect time to start a midweek market."

Cody estimates that roughly 2,000 Wacoans show up each week at the farmer’s market, where – on a busy day – there are up to 40 local vendors. “Local” being anywhere within a 150-mile radius of Waco - some coming from as far as Dripping Springs.  Cody also says that the Farmer’s Market is now in the middle of what’s known as a food desert, where there’s a dearth of fresh food options available.

“The Farmer's market being where it is, in downtown Waco and next to the river, I would like to think and hope is filling a food need for people in that area," Cody said.

The first midweek Downtown Waco Farmer’s Market takes place this Tuesday April 21.
