This week temperatures in Waco reached as high as 106, the highest it's been so far this summer. With the first heat advisory of August, the National Weather Service offers some tips to beat the heat.

Jamie Gudmestad is a meteoroligst with the National Weather Service's North Texas office. She says knowing the signs of heat-related illnesses, like heat stroke, and being aware of other preventative measures are important when going out in the Texas heat.

"If you're going outdoors you should take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors; apply and reapply sunscreen often; wear light, breathable clothing, lightly colored; stay hydrated, drink lots of water and avoid beverages with alcohol or caffeine," Gudmestad said.

Rain could also provide a temporary repreieve from the heat, but Waco hasn't had rain since late June.
