From Texas Standard

School’s back in session and high school football is just around the corner.

Friday night lights are big in Texas, to say the least – Waco-based author Chad Conine tells the stories of these high school players in his new book Texas: The Republic of Football. He says that his love of the sport inspired him to write the book.

“As I’ve gone on, I’ve got to cover college games and a few NFL games and all kinds of different sports,” Conine says, “and high school football Friday nights are different and unique, and in some ways better than any other thing that I cover. Because you get into that post-season you get in that time of the year where it’s really special.”

What you’ll hear in this interview:

– How Conine wrote the book

– His favorite stories of lesser-known football stars

– What Conine sees as the difference between high school and college ball
