Today students in Baylor’s Philanthropy and the Public Good class presented $75,000 in grants to 14 different local nonprofit groups, like World Hunger Relief and The Waco Civic Theater

Baylor senior Maria Dillman explained the class’ design during today’s ceremony.

“At the beginning of the semester some generous donors gave our class Philanthropy and the Public good a very special gift," Dillman said. "This gift however was a bit different from the normally wrapped presents found at holidays and birthdays. There was one condition attached to this gift of grand dollars: simply that we give it all away.”

At the beginning of the semester students reviewed between 60 and 70 interested nonprofits, focusing on key areas like health and wellness, and community development. Eventually the student functioned as a quasi-board of directors, deciding on how to  allocate funds. They also spent the semester learning about the history and philosophy of giving back.

The class – led by Doctor Andy Hogue – is part of the Philanthropy Lab, a national effort to spark student interest and involvement in the field of philanthropy. There are a total of 12 participating schools across the country.
