Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Faces 3 Felony Counts

This morning Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton turned himself in at the Colin County jail, in his hometown of McKinney, Texas.

Paxton is facing 3 charges – two are first-degree felonies for securities fraud involving more than $100,000 and a third-degree felony for “acting as an investment adviser representative without being registered by the Texas Securities Board.”

According to Paxton’s lawyer, Paxton will plead not guilty to the charges and will “demand a trial by jury.”

Shortly after Paxton’s booking this morning, the Texas Republican party issued a statement, saying “some of the outrageous events surrounding this sloppy process certainly do not typify the level of quality that Texans expect from our judicial system.”

But following Paxton’s indictment, Texas democrats and liberal organizations were calling for the Attorney General’s resignation.

The group Texans for Public Justice – a political watchdog organization – who originally filled criminal complaints against Paxton, say “it's time to determine in a court of law if Attorney General Paxton violated the very state laws that he is supposed to uphold and defend."

Texans for Public Justice originally filed those complaints in Travis County, but the case was ultimately moved to Collin County since that’s where purported crimes originated.
