Waco Hippodrome Announces November Opening Gala

After much anticipation Hippodrome theatre staff announced this afternoon the date for the official opening gala for Waco’s historic theatre. The three day event plans to ring in a new chapter in Hippodrome history.

Complete with a Hippo mascot named Humphrey, the Hippodrome has taken on a new shape and form – while trying to maintain the flavor of the theatre’s past. And after a few hiccups along the way – a grand opening event will span over 6 days starting on Friday, November 14th.

Shane Turner is one of the owners of the Hippodrome. He says the staff is excited about the opportunity the theater will bring to the community.

I think it’s gonna play a big part in what goes on in Waco with the arts in the future," said Tuner. "By getting this building back open.”

The first day of the gala on November 14th will include a variety show from several local entertainment groups including Out on a Limb Dance Company, Baylor Percussion, Baylor Theatre and FACE. They will also be screening films made on the Hippodrome. Those festivities are scheduled to being at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will have several live music acts including Restless Heart, Lorrie Morgan and Mel Tillis. There will also be a street party on Austin Ave. headlined by the Ray Johnston Band. That beings at 5 p.m. The first movie scheduled to be shown at the theater will be the third Hunger Games installment – 'Mockingjay.' But that will be on a later date after the opening gala. The Hippodrome will have more information on these events on their Facebook and Twitter.

Hippodrome renovations include an auditorium with a 12-hundred seating capacity, along with an outside patio and a restaurant and full service bar. There are two screens in the theater: one on the lower level and one on the balcony that’s sound and light proof. The theatre last closed its doors in 2010.

Hippodrome Programming Director Melissa Green says the theatre will bring something unique compared to larger chain theaters or restaurants.

“We have all of that nestled inside a 100 year old historic building that’s really been a landmark in Waco,” said Green. “I think it’s a great, unique experience because you can see these wonderful films and have a great meal in this beautiful building.”
